Phonics in Year 1
We follow the programme ULS in Year 1. We are currently working in Phase 5.
By the end of phase 5 children should be able to:
Children should be able to:
- Recognise and use new graphemes for sounds they already know
- e.g. ai → a-e, ay, ea
- Read graphemes in words where one sound has different spellings
- rain, play, break
- Read words with alternative pronunciations
- cow (animal) vs cow (verb)
- Blend phonemes automatically to read:
- unfamiliar words
- longer words
- sentences and short texts
- Read tricky (common exception) words fluently
- e.g. said, have, like, some, were
