We will be exploring pitch using glockenspiels and learning a song about brave nurses.

English

In term 3, we will be reading and exploring Hospital Dog by Julia Donaldson and How to heal a Broken Wing by Bob Graham. We will also be doing some non-fiction writing linked to our enquiry and significant nurses throughout history.

We will also be using drama to explore different characters for example children in a hospital ward.

In term 4, we will be enjoying the story Christopher Nibble by Charlotte Middleton. We will be using adjectives in our writing to make it more interesting. We will also be understanding what nouns, verbs and adjectives are and their function in a sentence.

We will be writing a recount of a trip to Westonbirt at the end of term 4.

Our writing will continue to focus around orally composing sentences before writing as well as ensuring all of our sentences use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will be using ‘and’ to join two sentences together to make a compound sentence and practicing reading skills including making predictions and inferences about a text.

In grammar, we will be also be thinking about word endings including adding ‘s’ and ‘es’ to make plurals.

Maths

In Maths this term, we will be focusing on naming and describing 2D and 3D shapes. We will be exploring repeating patterns and rotating shapes to match a particular orientation . We will also be exploring numbers to 10 and exploring addition. We will then move on to telling the time (o’clock and half past) towards the end of term 4.

Keep an eye on Seesaw for guidance on activities you can do at home to support your child’s maths learning.

Useful Information

Seesaw

In Year 1 we will be using Seesaw to update you with important messages and the children’s learning. Please use the app to find pictures as they will not be posted on the website to ensure everything is in an easily accessible place. Please see your class teacher for the QR code.

PE in Year 1 is every Tuesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon (from term 3). The children will get changed into their PE kits after lunch so they need to stay in school on their pegs.

The children need shorts, t-shirt and PE shoes – all named and the correct colours. Please ensure they have a warm layer for outdoor PE which will be on a Thursday afternoon from term 3.

The children will have a specific day each week when their reading books are changed. Please ask if you are unsure which day your child changes their books. They will be given 2 books to read to you and 1 sharing book for you to read together.

There is additional guidance on reading with your child on the Home Learning section of the Year 1 page and on Seesaw.

The children’s Monkey Books will be checked each week to ensure that they are reading at least 5 times. We have a reward chart for the children who read at least 5 times at home.

If you think that your child is reading their books confidently and are understanding what they are reading please let us know so that we can assess them before moving them to the next book band. Additional information about the book bands can be found on the English section of the website
