Our Pledge
At Stoke Bishop Primary School we have an inclusive culture that values diversity, promotes equality and fosters an understanding that all members of our community are of equal worth. We understand that we can only learn, grow and thrive when there is a sense of belonging, so that everyone connected to the school feels proud of their identity and are able to participate fully in school life. Our lives are richer and stronger by embracing and valuing the variety of our community as it evolves.
What does Equality, Diversity and Inclusion look like through advocacy?
There are an increasing range of opportunities for children to engage in activities that develop their understanding of advocacy, giving them experiences that build confidence through ‘giving back’ to others, this could be within our school community, or to our wider community. Advocacy Week in Term 6 ensures all children in are able to engage in activities promoting advocacy. This could be supporting our local Foodbank, taking part in ‘Singing for the Brain’ session at our local dementia outreach centre, or completing a wildlife audit to support the local
nature reserve.

What does Equality, Diversity and Inclusion look like through a celebration of language and culture?
We are proud to have a growing number of multilingual children within our school. There are 27 different languages spoken at Stoke Bishop Primary School, making up around 17% of our school community. We recognise multilingualism as a strength and work hard to ensure that families with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds are welcomed into our school community.
Our induction programme means that the whole school works together to welcome and settle in new children and their families. High quality teaching and a school-wide culture of inclusivity means that the cultural, linguistic and academic needs of each child are met.
Diversity is seen as a strength at Stoke Bishop Primary School. Our community’s different cultural backgrounds and languages play an integral part in enriching our vibrant school, and the positive contribution they make to our local community is recognised and celebrated.
We have two EAL Champions at Stoke Bishop Primary School, Mrs Woodman-Smith and Mrs Whittard-Jones, who are available to answer any questions you may have. To book a visit or for more information please contact the school office on 0117 3772173, or stoke.bishop.p@bristol-schools.uk
What does Equality, Diversity and Inclusion look like through our work with Alzheimer’s Society?
What does Equality, Diversity and Inclusion look like through our Pupil Leadership Programme?
Our EDI journey is linked heavily to the development of Pupil Leadership as a demonstration of and vehicle for, building children’s independence. The aim is to see children taking a lead in the decision making around their learning and in so doing also taking responsibility for it. One of the biggest enablers is to give children roles as monitors / mentors. It allows them to see that they can make decisions, influence and support others.
All children will either be or have a buddy, starting with our Year 6 children buddying Reception. This takes place on a 1-1 basis as well as through joint year group activities (eg making books and reading to others or teaching specific sporting skills). The impact of this is significant, with genuine cross year group bonds being made, it makes a huge difference to both the buddy and the buddied, where they are discussing and working on core Maths skills for instance.
